Quick Guide: Lamination
Lamination is a clear protective film applied to vinyl after it has been printed. Lamination provides a level of protection for stickers, signs and vehicle wraps against scratching and normal wear and tear. Adding lamination also provides layer of UV protection and therefor reduces ink fading.

Things to Consider
Lamination is an important thing to consider for any vinyl project. It is a good idea to laminate any items such as decals or stickers that will be exposed to outside elements such as wind, rain, heat and cold. That being said, it is absolutely essential when considering vehicle wraps. Lamination also provides vinyl with an extra layer that helps reinforce its structure. Because it makes the final product thicker it prevents the vinyl from being overstretched or torn during installation.
Types of Vinyl
Another thing to be aware of is that there are a wide variety of laminates on the market. It is important to choose the correct laminate for the vinyl that is being used. Manufacturers design lamination to be used with specific vinyls. Failure to do so would be asking for trouble!
Lamination can come in several different finishes including gloss, satin or matte. They all provide the same essential role in protecting your investment. There are even special effect laminates that can really add a unique look to the finished product including finishes such as sparkle, carbon fiber, brushed metal, and chrome overlays.
When Is It Safe Not To Laminate?
Sometimes lamination may not be necessary. Temporary signs or promotional stickers may not require lamination. In these cases it may not be in your budget to laminate, but be aware that these jobs will be prone to scratches, scuffs, tears and fading.
Another instance where post printing lamination is not necessary would be UV printing. The Versa UV LEJ-640 is a UV LED Flatbed Printer that applies and cures a layer of UV coating directly to the media as it prints. Therefor no lamination needs to be applied post printing. We use this printer for most flat sign jobs including, but not limited to, storefront signs, yard signs, tin signs and even doors!
